ASHLAND – It's time to toss out that old mattress stuffed away in your garage and your dryer that's run one too many cycles.

Claremont Avenue project continues: Claremont Avenue $3.6 million resurfacing project goes to bid

Ashland's 2022 Spring Cleanup is ready to roll as city employees pick up old furniture, mattresses and household appliances that have seen better days.

Spring Cleanup starts April 4 and spans to April 29, with each week routed to a different colored-coated section.

Here's the breakdown:

  • Week One: Starting Center Street and includes all streets south of West Main Street and west of Broad Street.
  • Week Two: Starting with West Main Street while working to but not including Orange Street and Troy Road.
  • Week Three: Starting with Orange Street and Troy Road, working to but not including Cleveland Avenue/Middle Rowsburg Road. Though the route includes Cleveland Avenue north of Middle Rowsburg Road.
  • Week Four: Starting with both sides of Cleveland Avenue/Middle Rowsburg Road working to but not including Center Street.

Have Ashland Spring Cleanup materials out by 7:30 a.m.

The sanitation department will hit the road at 7:30 a.m. on the dot, Parks Director Jason Counts said, which means have your cleanup supplies out by then.

Typically six vehicles pick up tossed-away materials and bring them to the sanitation garage to be made into scrap, Counts said. Afterward, waste is brought to the landfill in Richland County. In 2021, 350 tons of material were collected while in 2019 it was 296 tons.

Items the sanitation department will accept are:

  • Microwaves
  • Dishwashers
  • Washers/dryers
  • Furnaces
  • Hot water heaters
  • Paint cans with dried paint
  • Carpet (four-foot sections)
  • Furniture/mattresses
  • Drained engines and transmissions (remove oil pans)
  • Drained mowers
  • Other assorted items

Items that aren't accepted are:

  • Tires
  • Gas tanks
  • Chemicals
  • Wet Paint
  • Unknown liquids
  • Yard waste
  • Rock or concrete materials
  • Steel drums
  • Asbestos materials/items containing asbestos
  • Electronics: TVs, computers, copiers
  • Any unit containing Freon: refrigerators, freezers, AC units

Ashland City arborist will help with brush clippings

Contact the arborist for help with brush chippings.

The sanitation department recommends participants separate different categories of items like metals, cardboard, furniture and recyclables. Break down large items to lengths of four feet, mark containers that you do not want to be taken, place normal, weekly trash and recyclable items separate from spring cleanup items and cover all upholstered furniture in plastic wrapping.

There are additional fees for placing items out earlier than one week before the designated pickup time, having more than three cubic yards of material and placing items on the curb after your designated pickup time. Charges will appear on utility bills.

Though Spring Cleanup isn't taking certain items like electronics and tires, the city collects those items at different times of the year, Counts said.
