An Eastern European Christmas Legend

In The Spider Who Saved Christmas, Raymond Arroyo brings a popular Eastern European Christmas legend to life. This gorgeous book tells the story of the Golden Orb Weaver spider who protected the Christ child.

An Unusual Christmas Ornament

In Poland and Ukraine, spider ornaments are commonly placed on Christmas trees. According to a legend little-known in America, a spider made a web to camouflage the cave where the Holy Family hid while fleeing Herod’ slaughter of the innocents. While the Holy Family slept, the spider spun a web across the opening of the cave which saved the Christ child’s life.

Beautiful Illustrations for a Beautiful Story

My favorite part of this book is Rand Gallegos’ luminous illustrations! The light seems to emanate from the Christ Child’s peaceful face in a way that fascinated my children and charmed me. To scroll through a full preview of these amazing pictures, check out the sales page from publisher Sophia Press.

Not for the Littlest Ones

This is a beautiful and unique Christmas picture book which older kids will enjoy, but I wouldn’t recommend it for the littlest children. My 3 year old (who’s a bit sensitive) was upset by the references to Herod slaughtering the innocent baby boys. The actual slaughtering isn’t described, of course, but there are descriptions of the wails and shrieks of dying babies, which may be upsetting to very young or sensitive children.

Great Present for 5-7 year olds

This beautiful book makes a great St. Nicholas Day or Christmas present for Catholic children 5+. Even your non-Catholic friends will enjoy this unique Christmas legend! We’ll be adding it to our Christmas book basket books this Advent.

I have a problem with the title, the events in this story take place at least a day after Jesus was born. A better title might be The Tinsel Miracle. The book has excellent illustrations.

"Everyone is here for a purpose," Mama Mary says. This is why Joseph spares the Golden spider. The spider that saved the Precious Baby Jesus' life. She was there for a purpose. This beautiful book, based on a legend, reminds us that no matter how bad a situation may seem, there is ALWAYS hope, found even in the tiniest most fragile things and even in the darkest most unexpected places.

Even the Golden Orb Weavers would love it if you read this to them!

I have never heard this legend, bit a interesting part of the Christmas story that we don't hear about much (Joseph, Mary and Jesus going to Egypt). I first encounted this legend in a 1989 book called "The Cobweb Christmas" by Jenny Koralek upon my first Christmas as a public librarian and found the story fascinating. I was pleased when our library purchased Raymond Arroyo's version and since Christmas holds were through, I sat down to read it this afternoon. Told from the point of view of Nephila, herself trying to protect her unborn spiderlings, it's an enchanting tale about the value of gifts, no matter how small, and how Christ touches all hearts of all creatures. The portrayal of Saint Joseph is another plus in this retelling. (view spoiler)[ There is a poignant background picture as the Holy Family prepares for bed--that of a soldier killing an infant during the slaughter of the males under two years of age ordered by King Herod. It is muted enough not to disturb little ones being read the story but there to remind us of the horror that happened. (hide spoiler)]
On a side note, if you need a cure for arachnophobia, this beautiful story will calm your fears (and make you think twice before killing that "unwanted" spider in your home).

Listening to Raymond Arroyo on EWTN this evening talking about the story and the spider, I learned something cool. The golden thread this kind of spider spins.
When I was a young child I saw a spider weaving a web of golden strands in the basement-garage of my piano teacher's house.
Now, I am an arachnaphobe! So my memories of spiders are all bad, and vivid! And decades later I wondered about those webs I had seen, as I climbed those scary steps into the house. I have never seen a colored spider

Now, I am an arachnaphobe! So my memories of spiders are all bad, and vivid! And decades later I wondered about those webs I had seen, as I climbed those scary steps into the house. I have never seen a colored spiderweb since. I have seen fuzzy ones -- and I learned about those -- but never a golden one again.
Then this evening I turned on the TV, and it was set to EWTN, and there was Raymond Arroyo talking about a spider (eek!) in the stable in Bethlehem (shudder) and saying that this kind of spider weaves a golden web.
Cool.
And a stable being one of my very favorite on Earth, especially on Christmas Eve when stables are warm and cosy with horses and cats and -- yeah, OK -- spiders ... a stable is the ONLY place where I don't "mind" spiders.
Because they keep down the horse flies.

Now to read the story ...

Nephila, the name of the spider, is also the name of this species of spider, also known as Golden Silk Orb-Weavers.

Herod’s men are out to kill all the baby boys under 2. They eventually find the cave where the baby Jesus is hiding with Joseph and Mary. Nothing is actually stopping them from going in, but they are tricked into retreating by something the spider does. The illustrations in this book are beautiful and intricate and really make you feel like you are right there, in the middle of the action. Will you love spiders after reading this book? Maybe not, but since you are unlikely ever to encounter a Golden Silk Orb-Weaver, you can confidently claim that you will never kill one of those spiders again, if you ever spot one in your home.

Readers familiar with Charlotte’s Web will enjoy another story in which a friendly spider selflessly takes risks to save someone else. Not only does this book tell a wonderful story, it’s an excellent catechetical tool for the Feast of the Holy Innocents.

This was a beautifully illustrated book, but the story left me feeling a little cold. First of all, this is the story of St. Felix...just dressed up as a story about the Holy Family. Also, I didn't like how St. Joseph was portrayed. He sort of comes across as the bad guy here--anxious, angry, aggressive, and untrusting, needing Mary to keep him in balance. I strongly believe that their relationship was more supportive and mutual than that.

I'm not sure what I expected from a book related to Christmas, but a fever dream where the Holy Family is saved from Herod's soldiers by the actions of a two-eyed spider was not it.

The story is contrived, the images kitsch of the worst kind, and at least 2 parts of the book are not suitable for young children.

My recommendation: Toss the book in the trash, and tell your children about the actual Christmas Spider traditions.

Very interesting! I had an aunt that would put webs on her tree and I had no idea why. She was not religious at all so I'm curious why she picked up this one legend but that's the way it goes. What a unique story this is, and the illustrations were beautiful. It won't be something I reread to my kiddos only because I'm a Biblical Christian and my focus is more on scriptural narratives rather than legends but wow what a cool one! Very interesting! My husband told me about this book after he saw it on Fox News. I had never heard anything about this legend before. This is the most precious story of how the scariest of insects saved the lives of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. God uses so many ways to touch our lives. “All are here for a reason. Let it be.”
