Western Reserve Health Education, as well as Trumbull Regional, Sharon Regional, and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, wish the graduating residents all the best in their future endeavors and welcome the 121st class of residents new.

Western Reserve Health Education (WRHE) is a not-for-profit 501c3 organization affiliated with Trumbull Regional Medical Center, Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, and Sharon Regional Medical Center. WRHE consists of several departments that foster medical education: Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education, Undergraduate Medical Education, Research and the Health Science Library.

WRHE has a long history in graduate medical education. Residency training began at Youngstown Hospital Association in the late 1800's with just three residents. Now, WRHE educates over 80 house staff in five residency and fellowship programs. WRHE offers residency and fellowship experiences at Trumbull Regional Medical Center, a major teaching facility for NEOMED, with diverse patient populations and outstanding faculty. The Office of Graduate Medical Education is committed to supporting all phases of medical education.

Our mission is to educate residents to become skillful, knowledgeable, and compassionate clinicians who find gratification in their work and make meaningful contributions to medicine.  We strive to maintain an academic environment committed to the highest standards in education and patient care.  We will provide excellent educational experiences of residents through guidance, evaluation, and graduated autonomy to facilitate their ethical, professional, and personal development while guarantying safe, high-quality patient care.

As a private community hospital and academic teaching center, WHRE serves the community by training highly competent medical professionals. Our goal is to produce professional practitioners who are thoroughly prepared to practice medicine.

Our residents serve as both students and teachers, as we believe in the philosophy that we learn best by teaching others. Residents in our program have opportunities to teach third and fourth year medical students, as well as learn from a multitude of specialists, faculty and community physicians.

Admission Criteria

The Western Reserve Health Education Family Medicine Program operates under the standard academic calendar year from July through June.

We participate in the National Resident Match Program, and interested candidates must apply online through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).  All complete applications are reviewed on an individual basis.  An application is considered complete when the following information has been received:

• Dean’s Letter

• Medical School Transcript

• Written Personal Statement

• Three letters of recommendation (at least two of these should be from members of the Department of Family Medicine at your school, affiliate, hospital or elective course, and current within the last 12 months)

• United States Medical License Examination (USMLE) Scores Part I and Part II

• Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certification (if applicable)

The Family Medicine Residency Training Selection Committee reviews applications for six (6) categorical PGY1 positions each year. We select the most qualified candidates to interview and rank based on the following criteria:

• Graduated from a U.S. or Foreign Medical School within the last two (2) years

• USMLE Steps I and II (CS and CK) Passage (Highly favored if Part III passed as well) – No failures

• J-1 visa sponsorship considered on a case-by-case basis

You must register for the “Match” (NRMP), as we do not accept any applicants outside of the “Match”.

Director's Message

For over 35 years, Western Reserve Health Education Family Medicine Residency has been at the forefront of health care in Youngstown, Ohio. We are very proud of our longevity and our commitment to provide excellence in care to the residents of Youngstown and surrounding communities.

As a private community hospital and academic teaching center, WHRE (at Trumbull Regional Medical Center) serves the community by training highly competent medical professionals. Our goal is to produce professional practitioners who are thoroughly prepared to practice medicine in all types of settings.

WRHE offers a three-year ACGME-accredited residency in Family Medicine, where residents are taught the art and science of Family Medicine. Our residents serve as both students and teachers, as we believe in the philosophy that we learn best by teaching others. Residents in our program have opportunities to teach third and fourth year medical students, as well as learn from a multitude of specialists, faculty and community physicians.

Throughout their training, residents also have an opportunity to learn different aspects of practice management from our faculty with over 20 years of real-world experience in private practice. This training will provide them with the business knowledge that is critical to becoming a successful family physician.  In addition, our faculty are involved in cutting-edge research projects involving advances in lipid analysis, genetic testing for CAD and various cancers which allow for resident participation and unique research opportunities.
