He was born to Paige Braswell and Rhett Akins in Valdosta, Georgia. Tim McGraw and Brooks & Dunn were among the other singers he knew as a child.  On his mother's side, he has one younger sister while on his father's side he has two younger half brothers.

Rhett eventually joined his father on stage to perform after learning to play the drums in junior high school. He was a member of a band called The High Heeled Flip Flops when he was in high school. Rhett studied communications at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. When he was twenty, he dropped out of college to focus on his music career. A publishing agreement with Big Machine Label Group followed, and he began writing tunes.

They've since divorced and remarried, both of Rhett's parents. As a result of Rhett's mother and father, he has two half-siblings.

“I Ain't Ready to Quit” was co-wrote with Jason Aldean on his 2010 album My Kinda Party and he got a record deal with Big Machine Records' Valory Music Group branch in 2011.  A total of 1.7 million copies were sold in its first year of release, making the record one of the best-selling debut albums of all time.
